Peran Dalang Cilik Dalam Pelestarian Budaya Wayang Kulit Di Desa Gegesik Kabupaten Cirebon

Abstract


This research examines the pivotal role of child puppeteers (dalang cilik) in preserving wayang kulit culture in Gegesik Village, Cirebon, amidst modernization. Key challenges include declining youth interest, a shortage of master artists, instrument production constraints, and the krama language gap. This study aims to analyze child puppeteers as agents of regeneration, identify digital adaptation strategies, and map institutional synergies supporting the art's sustainability. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were gathered through observation, literature review, and in-depth interviews with practitioners, craftsmen, and community leaders. The results reveal that child puppeteers serve as vital cultural bridges through their technical and philosophical mastery. Preservation strategies involve innovative adaptations, including modern lighting and sound, interactive performances, and the utilization of digital platforms like TikTok and YouTube. Additionally, the proactive "Wakling" (Mobile Shadow Puppets) program effectively brings the tradition closer to the public. Successful regeneration is driven by a synergy of formal education, government infrastructure support, and the active involvement of local art studios. Ultimately, the integration of early education, local identity reinforcement, and digital technology is essential to ensuring wayang kulit remains a sustainable cultural identity in Gegesik Village.
